Opposition: Should not get to use medical marijuana
Post traumatic stress disorder patients have a multitude of options for treatment. One of these options is to treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder with medical marijuana. However, medical marijuana can have downsides. Medical marijuana has been known to have multiple side effects on the patients who have taken it. John Grant acknowledges that the munchies may be beneficial to some Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patients but not all of them. He mentioned in his article “Veterans Should Have Access to Medical Marijuana to Treat Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder,” “It seems "the munchies" can be beneficial to someone facing loss of appetite and emaciation.” (Grant par. 2). The munchies seem helpful for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patients who have stopped eating; however, the munchies are not beneficial to those who have not stopped eating. The munchies can make them gain weight which can make their disorder worse. Joey Peters explains in his article, “Some Experts Disagree That Medical Marijuana Should Be Considered as a Treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder,” that there are approximately three states that allow Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patients to be treated with medical marijuana, and one of those states is New Mexico (Peters par. 2). Dr. William Ulwelling, a psychiatrist in New Mexico, believes that Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patients will become addicted to medical marijuana and eventually become drug addicts (Peters par. 6). If Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patients get addicted to medical marijuana, then they will have more problems than their Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. There are multiple side effects from medical marijuana. Patients can die from overdosing on medical marijuana. Medical marijuana may not be the best solution for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patients.
Argument: Should get to use medical marijuana
Medical marijuana has been beneficial to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patients; however, marijuana is still illegal in some states. Many Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patients have already tried using medical marijuana and have had positive benefits. Grant reports in his article, “One vet who uses it fairly frequently says it helps him concentrate on creative matters” (Grant par. 5). This shows that using marijuana has helped veterans to be able to focus on tasks that their Post Traumatic Stress Disorder would normally not allow them to focus on. Medical marijuana makes people focus on a certain objects. This helps Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patients because many of them are unable to focus. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patients have a hard time focusing on tasks because the patient’s subconscious mind acts erratically. Loud noises bother the victims of this disorder and leads them to believe any loud sound is gunfire. Unfortunately, fireworks can have one of the strongest impact on the patient's mental health in a negative matter. Fortunately, this usually impacts the patients that were previously soldiers. Because all patients are different, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patients frequently have dissimilar symptoms. This disorder can restrict some individuals from being capable of riding in a car or plane again. Another symptom of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is not being able to focus. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patients need to be able to focus and medical marijuana helps them focus. Peters, in his article “Some Experts Disagree That Medical Marijuana Should Be Considered as a Treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder”, states, “To others in the medical industry, the dispute as to whether PTSD should be treated with marijuana is a low priority.” (Peters par. 31). There needs to be a cure for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patients. These patients should not have to continue to live with the disorder by which they are burdened. Grant believes that although marijuana may help it is no replacement for the hard work it takes to overcome Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (Grant par. 5). There have been many veterans who have tried using medical marijuana. One veteran has used medical marijuana for years on and off and he believes it has positive effects on his life (Grant par. 6). Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patients should get the opportunity to try medical marijuana as a treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patients need a cure and medical marijuana is a reliable substance to aid Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patients.
